Course overview

Why choose Midwifery with Professional Registration (Shortened Programme for Registered Adult Nurses) BSc at 四不像论坛?

Our specially shortened Midwifery BSc has been developed in partnership with local NHS hospitals, which means that up to 50% of teaching takes place in London's leading maternity wards.

You'll gain practical experience in a realistic and safe simulated environment at our new West Stand facility – our state-of-the-art training centre which is known for being one of the best in the UK.

HEE (Health Education England) will fund tuition fees and salary support for shortened programme students until April 2026. Read more about  on the NHS site.

What you will gain

Our course is approved by the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and you’ll be placed on the professional midwifery register once you graduate.

Once you graduate, there will be some great career opportunities available for you to choose from. Over 90% of our graduates are in employment.

Your skills will be in high demand in NHS labour and antenatal wards, private practices, as well as within communities, local clinics, and GP surgeries.

Accreditations

This course is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and leads to eligibility to receive the status as a Registered Midwife. This means the course is professionally recognised for being of the highest quality, focused on developing the knowledge and skills that employers require.

What you will learn

They will help you build the resilience needed to support others through pregnancy, childbirth and the early years of childcare.

Key modules include anatomy, physiology/pathophysiology, legal  or ethical concerns, and cultural and psychosocial issues.

On our highly-respected midwifery conversion degree, you will:

  • Spend half your time doing practical work at your placement hospital. Our partner hospitals include Whittington Hospital, North 四不像论坛 Hospital, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, BarkingHavering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust and Barts Health NHS trust
  • Get extensive practice of interprofessional working while you study. Clinical practice weeks will require you to work shifts and experience the 24-hour, seven-day care cycle to develop your understanding of women’s and babies’ needs throughout a 24-hour period
  • Your caseload will be purposefully small so you’re able to practice proficiency and continuity while being supported by a mentor
  • Practice the theories of the classroom in our high-tech nursing and midwifery simulation suites which feature Hololens simulations for you to safely practise skills such as resuscitation and dealing with complex care needs.

Our exceptional team will teach you the theory and skills needed to qualify as a Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Your studies will include anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, cultural and psychosocial issues, interprofessional working, legal and ethical issues. Upon graduation, you will be able to confidently assess, plan, implement and evaluate effective midwifery care. Your learning will be integrated with that of other students from our School of Health and Education and designated study days will be organised for shared learning with midwifery, medical and social work students. You will also develop interpersonal and collaborative skills to help you work effectively in multi-professional teams across healthcare and related sectors.

This module aims to aid you to integrate anatomy and physiology and related theory with practice, building on your existing nursing knowledge and skills. You will be encouraged to relate this knowledge to the midwife’s role, skills and responsibility when providing care to healthy women and their families during pregnancy, labour and puerperium. Throughout the module the emphasis will be on normal anatomy and physiology, drawing on your previous knowledge as qualified nurses and assisting you in your transition from nurse to midwife.

This module aims to build a firm foundation of knowledge relating to normal midwifery for the mother. In鈥痑ddition鈥痠t will help you to recognise and appreciate the midwife’s role, responsibilities and sphere of practice when providing care to healthy women during the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods and to enable the integration of theory with practice.鈥疍uring this module, you will build on their communication and research skills. The module will also draw on your previous experiences as nurses to facilitate the transition from nurse to midwife. The MORA (Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement) book will be incorporated for this module.

This module is designed to enable you to undertake the examination of the neonate from birth to 6-8 weeks of age. The theoretical and practical knowledge gained during the module will enable theory to be applied to practice with regards to physiology and recognition of deviation from normality in order to support parents in the partnership of care of their new born baby. This will enable the provision of a framework of practice and will empower you in an enhanced and autonomous role as lead professional within the care of the newborn.

The aim of the module is to understand complex care in midwifery and deviations from normality whilst working with the multiagency team. You will be supported to develop an understanding of recognising complexities and effectively managing the mother and her baby to produce good birth outcomes. You will learn to participate and manage emergencies when caring for mothers and fetus/newborn during childbirth process. There will be a focus on midwifery proficiencies in the administration and calculation of medicines.

This module is designed to enable you to undertake the examination of the neonate from birth to 6-8 weeks of age. The theoretical and practical knowledge gained during the module will allow early identification of abnormalities and/or potential problems in order that the baby, parents and professionals can be informed and prepared for the required care. This will enable the provision of a framework of practice and will empower you in an enhanced and autonomous role as lead professional within the care of the newborn.

The aim of the module is to ensure that you move towards the role of autonomous midwife practitioner and that you are competent to deal with a variety of normal and/or challenging situations in midwifery practice. During this module you will be encouraged to scrutinize and reflect upon your own practice and critically examine the impact of external influences on the midwifery profession as you consolidate their management skills within the midwifery practice areas. You will also be able to promote normality, and act as an advocate for women and support their choices. There will be a focus on change management and Innovation to improve on existing practices and offer evidence based midwifery care.

Teaching and learning

Teaching

The course is split equally between theory and practice, with clinical experience and practical simulations forming an important part of your learning - the emphasis is on observing what to do, doing it yourself and then improving through feedback. You will have your own patients and will be supported by a mentor. You will also gain some experience in other areas of healthcare. You will also attend lectures, seminars, workshops and group and individual tutorials, and learn through problem-solving and role-play exercises, visits, critical reviews of research studies, case study analyses, group work and online research. You will keep a reflective diary of your progress.

During your first year, your weekly timetable will typically consist of:

  • 4-5 hours of lectures
  • 3-4 hours of seminars
  • 1 hour of supervised practical computer laboratory work
  • 2 hours of practical workshops

Outside of teaching hours, you’ll learn independently through self-study which will involve reading articles and books, working on projects, undertaking research, and preparing for assessments including coursework, presentations and exams. Here is an indication of how you will split your time:

Our excellent teaching and support teams will help you develop your skills from research and practical skills to critical thinking. And we offer free 24-hour laptop loans with full desktop software, free printing and Wi-Fi to use on or off campus.

This course is based on 100% coursework.

You will be assessed through a variety of methods including written assessments, essays, reports, practical sessions, presentations and group assessments. You will be given regular feedback on your work. You will develop IT skills and the ability to interpret numerical data.

We'll test your understanding and progress with informal and formal tests.

The informal tests usually take place at least once per module, from which you’ll receive feedback from your tutor. The grades from these tests don’t count towards your final marks.

There are formal assessments for each module, usually at the end, which will count towards your module and your final marks.

Assessments are reviewed annually and may be updated based on student feedback or feedback from an external examiner.

New nursing and midwifery tech and facilities

We have recently launched our outstanding new clinical health facilities in the West Stand at StoneX Stadium.

Our high-tech simulation suites link the theories of the classroom with the practice of treating patients in a hospital environment with:

  • The latest simulators for you to practice realistic emergency care situations and hospital scenarios
  • Life-like mannequins that can simulate symptoms, diseases and conditions you’ll encounter as a working nurse
  • Video recorders so you can receive evidence-based feedback from students and teachers watching you practice.

The high-tech nursing and midwifery simulation suites allow you to link the theories of the classroom with the practice of treating patients in a hospital environment.

Placements

Placements are an integral part of the course. Many of our students go on to get their first job after graduation in their placement locations. The programme comprises 50% theory and 50% practice and takes place with hospitals in north London with whom we have excellent relationships such as:

During clinical practice weeks, you are required to work shifts to experience 24-hour, seven-day care to develop understanding of the needs and experiences of women and babies throughout a 24-hour period. You are assessed in the practice area and have the support of a designated mentor. To promote the development of proficiency and promote continuity, you will follow a small caseload.

Placements greatly improve graduate employment prospects, and those who take part achieve excellent academic results through applying the learning in a professional setting.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

Our entry requirements provide a guide to the qualifications that you’ll need to study our courses. We have a personalised admissions approach and we make fair but aspirational offers. We want you to aim high and achieve great results.

Qualifications

  • This degree is tailored towards qualified adult nurses who are on the NMC Professional Register
  • We require 70 credit points at diploma level
  • We also require 12 months experience working as a nurse

Further requirements

To begin the course you must complete a satisfactory enhanced DBS check, Occupational Health Check, and provide suitable references.

Applicants whose first language is not English must have competence in English language and the most common English Language requirements for European students is IELTS with an overall score of 7.0 (with minimum 7.0 in all four components).

Applicants must be digitally literate as all recruitment processes and many teaching and learning activities within the programme involve the use of technology and digital processes, reflecting the realities of healthcare practice.

We are unable to accept applications for deferred entry or defer existing offers for this programme to the next possible start date.

Occupational Health Vaccination Requirements

Please be aware of the need to be fully vaccinated before you commence your programme with us in September. Please see our guidance notes for Nursing, Midwifery and Nursing Associate Students.

All nursing and midwifery students are required to have the necessary blood tests, screening and vaccinations to ensure you comply with the Department of Health guidelines on immunisations and screening to protect both you and your patients. You will not be able to attend a clinical placement until you are fully assessed and cleared by occupational health advisors.

Our occupational health screening processes are designed to assess your medical suitability to work in a variety of health care settings.

If it is decided that you are unable to safely work in a clinical setting due to medical reasons the University will endeavour to guide you to a more suitable programme.
