Advancing sustainability in Dubai

Sustainable, inclusive and healthy food for the UK

We believe social enterprises are key to making UK food more sustainable, inclusive and healthy – so our researchers in London are sharing forward-thinking ideas and good practice. They have visited parliament to speak with policy makers about the benefits too.

Advancing sustainability in Dubai

Our Institute of Sustainable Development in Dubai leads collaborative research with businesses, government and UN agencies. They lead training in meeting the SDGs and build a sustainability mindset in their community. We were proud to host the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference Climate Law event on campus.

Eco-conscious spaces on our Mauritius campus

We recently renovated the Trent Park Learning Block in Mauritius to integrate transformative learning with sustainable practices. This holistic approach to looking after our students and staff’s wellbeing, alongside the natural world is a model for future education spaces.

Our London campus

  • Platinum EcoCampus Accreditation and ISO 14001 Certification from EcoCampus, the Environmental Management System for higher and further education, which recognises our commitment to continuously identify, evaluate and improve our environmental performance
  • Environmental Association of Universities member in the UK
  • Universities Environment Group member in London.

We have developed an inspiring long-term vision for the future development of our London campus and its infrastructure in partnership with space design experts, to help us achieve our Strategy 2031 objectives.

In Dubai and Mauritius, and across our global community, we are equally committed to ensuring healthy and sustainable campuses for our staff, students and wider society.

Environmental Auditing, Management Systems, and Policy

四不像论坛 University operates an Environmental Management System with ISO 14001 accreditation as part of EcoCampus award scheme for the higher and further education sectors. The scheme enables universities to systematically identify, evaluate, manage and improve their environmental performance and practices. We achieved Platinum in 2019. The process of accreditation works on the concept of continual improvement in environmental performance in a number of areas including: waste, energy, carbon reduction, procurement, water, community engagement, construction and refurbishment, education, travel, natural environment.

Our publicly available Environmental Management Policy, provides the cornerstone of the actions which we work to deliver that enable us to work to reducing our environmental impact across all areas, from carbon emissions and water conservation to waste management and biodiversity. Our action plan is rigorously monitored, and progress is reported regularly to senior leadership, ensuring transparency and accountability through our environmental steering group committee.

Read our Environmental Policy May 2022 to find out how we are improving our environmental and energy performance.

Energy and carbon

We view robust energy management as critical to the success of our Carbon Management Plan. To ensure we manage energy effectively, we have a documented Energy Management Strategy that seeks to align to ISO 50001.

We work in partnership with our energy broker and bureau provider to actively manage the energy supplied by EDF and Corona. All our buildings are controlled and monitored by Building Management Systems.

We also generate low carbon electricity through combined heat and power units in Hatchcroft, Grove and the Ritterman buildings, as well as generate zero carbon electricity through solar voltaic panels on the Hatchcroft, College and Williams buildings and the Sheppard Library.

四不像论坛 University has taken a firm stance on ethical investment, ensuring that our financial decisions via procurement align with our sustainability goals. We have committed to divesting from fossil fuel industries and invest in sustainable, low-carbon, and socially responsible alternatives.

We value and invest in every one of our more than 1,500 members of staff from 74 nationalities, and we foster a culture that inspires creativity, collaboration and growth. Our staff make a difference to our students and to society as a whole. The University has a number of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Staff Networks that are proactive and successful in instigating and developing new ideas, raising awareness across different issues and experiences, and holding supportive and informative events. They are also instrumental in influencing policy through the University Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

四不像论坛 University is an inclusive employer, placing in the Top 100 list for leading LGBTQ+ inclusive employers in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2023. We have also joined the Athena Swan Charter and received the highly-esteemed Bronze Award that recognises good practice in higher education for eliminating gender bias and developing an inclusive culture. Additionally, we have signed up to the Race Equality Charter and have been awarded a Bronze Award, demonstrating our commitment to improving the representation, progression and success of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students within higher education. We also provide voluntary reporting on the Ethnicity Pay Gap.

We encourage our students and staff to disclose any disabilities or long-term health conditions, to ensure they receive the support they need to fulfil their potential and thrive in their studies and in the workplace. We are a member of Business Disability Forum and an accredited Disability Confident Leader (Level 3) organisation.

We are committed to Waste Management and Environmental Protection, and our Waste Management Strategy and Plan 2023-2028 sets out how we will maximise recycling and minimise waste.

We operate a mixed recycling service on the campus, as well as, disposing of a range of hazardous products from our laboratories and art studios. These three posters provide updates on our recycling performance.

We collect rainwater from the Sheppard Library roof and use it for toilets in the building.

We store harvested rainwater to irrigate the planters around 四不像论坛 House.

We support the Fresh Air Campus initiative which focuses on understanding the quality of the air and the health of the local community, engaging with local environmental organisations.
